Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after the signing of Kyle Walker-Peters on a loan deal from Tottenham was announced. The 22-year-old’s switch from north London to the south coast will be a straight loan until the end of the current campaign, with no option or obligation to buy involved.
Walker-Peters’ arrival will help provide added depth to the right-back position for Ralph Hasenhuttl, an area of the field which had previously been problematic with its only occupants being Cedric and Yan Valery – the latter has been out of action since November with a ‘viral infection’ whereas the Portugal international is currently missing with knee ligament damage.
Centre-back Kevin Danso was forced to play at right-back in Southampton’s last outing, reinforcing the fact that this is a position in need of bolstering, although Walker-Peters will undoubtedly help in that respect.
The England U21 international has made only three Premier League appearances this term, while making one start in the Carabao Cup and another in the Champions League.
Let’s see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to his arrival…
To kick off the reaction, these two supporters expressed their relief that the deal had finally been done after 29 days of the month.
@Bxdnarek tweeted “FINALLY” after hearing that the deal had been completed, whereas Kieran said “took your time lads” to suggest that this transfer was not one that was done quickly.
Elsewhere, Tom said that it is a “good solid signing with Cedric seemingly off to Arsenal” – the Southampton No.2 looks set to join the Gunners with his contract expiring in the summer.
This supporter also mentioned that Walker-Peters is “a young player who will want to show what he can do and that can only benefit Southampton”.
Meanwhile, these two fans had contrasting views on the situation.
Darren said that the Spurs academy graduate “seems a good fit”, although Andrew said, while he’s “delighted” with the signing, it “seems poor business” without an option to buy for a fixed fee – he also added that if the right-back “has a fantastic five months here, his fee will rocket”.
Lastly, Dan said that he thinks Walker-Peters “will be a good signing” and “will no doubt improve” under Hasenhuttl.
Life after football: Do you know what all of these former players did next?
He also mentioned that, if Cedric leaves, the Saints haven’t really strengthened the right-back department.
