da aposte e ganhe: Dean Ashton has stated that he is impressed with what Sebastien Haller has shown so far for West Ham, but admitted that he is yet to be blown away by the striker.
What did he say?
The former Hammers’ striker is well aware of what it takes to perform in the Premier League, and recognised the good qualities of the Frenchman which have allowed him to fit in well so far, such as his hold-up play.
Despite the praise, Ashton still holds some reservations about the 26-year-old, mainly because he is yet to see that instinct in the striker which has made a lasting impression on him. In other words, Haller has done nothing to particularly stand out thus far.

Speaking to Goal, he said: “He has shown so many good signs of the quality player that he is. When the ball comes into him, his hold-up play is very good.
“He’s got himself a couple of goals. We’re just still waiting to see that glimpse of absolute quality in terms of his finishing. He hasn’t scored a goal yet when I’ve gone ‘wow’. That’s the mark of a top striker.
“[There’s] plenty to improve, but a really good signing to start with and someone who can lead the line as a physical presence.”
Significant contribution
Ashton’s comments about Haller are a little harsh considering what he has offered his new side so far.
He was an expensive buy but he has adjusted quickly and fitted in well to the system Manuel Pellegrini operates with.
Haller’s finishing has been criticised yet he took his four goals well, and has a decent return from his average of 2.1 shots per game.
The no.9 has hinted at the all-round game he possesses, and if he can play more like he did last term – when he contributed 20 goals and 12 assists in all competitions – then he will begin to show his value to the team.
Haller doesn’t need to wow Ashton to be considered effective, and as long as he continues to act as a focal point for his side whilst adding goals Pellegrini will likely be content.
Once he builds up his understanding more with those around him, and the likes of Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini improve on their underwhelming performances, then he should begin to show the best of what he has to offer.
