Manchester United captain, Nemanja Vidic insists the club’s fans will be on their best behaviour as United face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, The Daily Star reports.
The match is Liverpool’s first at home since the final verdict was delivered on the Hillsborough tragedy and there are fears that United fans will engage in tasteless chants about the event – something which was reportedly evident with a minority of fans in the Red Devils’ home match against Wigan.
But Vidic believes there is still a great deal of respect between the two most successful clubs in England and feels the whole situation has been blown out of proportion.
He said: “I don’t think we should put so much pressure on our fans. People always try to make a big thing out of a small one but I don’t have any worries. We have shown many times in the past and I think we will be proud of them.
“The big teams respect each other and we are going to play football.”
The emotional significance of the game has understandably taken precedence in the build-up, but Liverpool will be desperately hoping for their first win of the season against their fiercest rivals.
Meanwhile, United have recovered from an opening-day defeat to Everton to sit second in the table with nine points – one behind early pace-setters, Chelsea.
Sir Alex Ferguson should have Darren Fletcher in the squad, after the midfielder made his return from a chronic bowel condition in last night’s win over Galatasaray.
“The supporters recognise what a tough time he has had for the last year. They gave him a marvellous reception”, Ferguson said.
